How is ADHD treated?

Short answer

Treatment can include changes to your surroundings, medication and talking therapies. NICE says adults should be offered medication if ADHD still causes significant problems after practical changes have been tried. For children under 5, group parent training comes first.

Medication

Common options include methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine. A specialist starts them and checks your heart rate, blood pressure, weight and sleep.

Other support

Talking therapies like CBT and practical changes at work or school can help alongside, or instead of, medication.
