What the WHO says about ADHD medicine for children

This page only reports what the WHO states. Decisions about medicine are made with a qualified clinician.

Screening is not a diagnosis. You can ask for help without being certain that ADHD is the explanation.

The WHO recommendation

The WHO mhGAP guideline (2023) makes a conditional recommendation, based on low-certainty evidence, that methylphenidate may be offered to children aged 6 and over and adolescents with a diagnosis of ADHD, under specialist care.

It is not a general recommendation for adults and gives no dosing advice here.

In the UK

NICE NG87 sets out how ADHD medicine is considered and reviewed by specialists in the UK.
