How to get an adult ADHD evaluation in the US: a step-by-step guide

Lots of adults wonder whether ADHD explains why everyday things take so much effort. In the US, there's no single test, but there is a clear first step: talk with a healthcare provider.

Screening is not a diagnosis. You can ask for help without being certain that ADHD is the explanation.

ADHD can continue into adulthood

The CDC says ADHD symptoms start in childhood and can continue into adulthood, but they may look different in adults. Hyperactivity may show up as inner restlessness, and symptoms can feel stronger when adult demands increase.

Some adults have ADHD but were never diagnosed. Difficulties at work, at home or in relationships are a good reason to raise it with a doctor.

Step by step: getting evaluated

  1. Book an appointment with a primary care provider, or a mental health professional such as a psychologist or psychiatrist.
  2. Check with your insurance plan about referrals and coverage before you book.
  3. Bring a few specific examples of how difficulties affect work, home or relationships.
  4. Expect questions about your history from childhood to now; there is no single test.

Who can diagnose ADHD?

According to the CDC, an ADHD diagnosis can be made by a mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, or by a primary care provider. There is no single test.

Other conditions, such as sleep problems, anxiety and depression, can have similar symptoms, so a careful evaluation looks at the whole picture.

What an adult evaluation usually involves

CHADD describes an interview about your history from childhood to now, and how your symptoms affect your life. With your agreement, the clinician may also talk with a partner, parent or close friend who knows you well.

Rating scales are often used as part of the picture, but they don't make the diagnosis on their own.

How to prepare

Write down a few recent, specific examples, and when you first remember similar difficulties. Note what helps, what you've tried, and any questions you have.

Check with your insurance plan or provider about referrals and coverage before you book. An online screener can help you organise your thoughts, but it can't confirm or rule out ADHD.

Questions people ask

Can my primary care doctor diagnose ADHD?

Yes. The CDC says a primary care provider can diagnose ADHD, as can mental health professionals such as psychologists and psychiatrists.

Is there a test for adult ADHD?

No single test can diagnose ADHD. An evaluation brings together your history, how symptoms affect your life, and often rating scales.

Can workplaces help?

The CDC notes that people with ADHD can request workplace accommodations from their employer. Not everyone needs them, but some people find them helpful.
