Homework battles and ADHD: what parents can discuss with school

Many children struggle with homework at times. If difficulties last and affect home and school, it may be worth a calm conversation with the school and your GP.

Screening is not a diagnosis. You can ask for help without being certain that ADHD is the explanation.

Look across settings

The NHS explains ADHD signs in children usually show in more than one setting, such as home and school.

Ask the teacher whether they see similar difficulties in class.

Support while you wait

NICE recommends that support for a child does not have to wait for a formal diagnosis, and mentions changes to the environment as part of care.

  1. Note when homework goes well, not only when it doesn't.
  2. Share examples with the school.
  3. Speak to a GP if concerns continue.
