ADHD assessment in Wales: a step-by-step guide for adults

In Wales, adult ADHD services are run by local health boards, and you're usually referred by your GP or another professional. Right to Choose is an England-only right and doesn't apply in Wales.

Screening is not a diagnosis. You can ask for help without being certain that ADHD is the explanation.

Signs worth talking about

NHS 111 Wales lists the common signs of adult ADHD and advises speaking to your GP if you think you may have it.

Step by step in Wales

For example, the Hywel Dda adult ADHD service accepts professional referrals, usually from a GP, and reviews each one. It is not a crisis service: for mental health support in Wales, call 111 and press option 2, or 999 in an emergency.

  1. Speak to your GP or another healthcare professional about your difficulties.
  2. If appropriate, they refer you to your health board's adult ADHD service. You can't usually refer yourself.
  3. The service reviews the referral and may ask your GP for more information.
  4. If it's accepted, you're added to the waiting list for an assessment.

How to prepare

Write down a few recent examples and when you first remember similar difficulties. An online screening result can help, but it is not a diagnosis.
