Adult ADHD assessment in Ireland: the HSE pathway step by step

In the Republic of Ireland, the public route starts with your GP, who refers you to your local adult mental health team. The HSE is setting up adult ADHD clinics area by area, so what's available depends on where you live.

Screening is not a diagnosis. You can ask for help without being certain that ADHD is the explanation.

Step by step with the HSE

  1. Your GP refers you to your local adult mental health team.
  2. The team does an initial assessment, including screening for ADHD.
  3. If screening suggests ADHD, you may be referred to an adult ADHD clinic, where these exist in your area.
  4. The clinic carries out a detailed assessment, then a feedback session to talk through the outcome and next steps.

Clinics are still being set up

The HSE Model of Care describes adult ADHD teams being set up in each mental health area. Your GP can tell you how referral works locally.
